I don’t understand how people can find the most ridiculous discussions on Tumblr that vaguely relate to themes that are discussed on social justice blogs, then think that every topic is just as ridiculous as that. I saw one in which two people were talking about if Pokemon was ableist (I skimmed it because I just could not) and they mentioned how they knew someone who was a Pokemon? And we all know how collectively most people feel about the Otherkin community.

I personally think it’s a ridiculous concept that holds no basis from fact but whatever, do what you want. I’m not going to go out and crusade that all people that think they have the soul of an animal go and get their heads chopped off, but I don’t think they’re oppressed like they say they are. Racism, white privilege and whiteness are topics that have plenty of scholarly writings to back it up. Women’s studies and feminism too are things that have been studied for decades with plenty of proven research to back any claims made up.

If you have studied sociology at all in your life, these things are usually plain to see. It’s wrong to deem all topics and all social justice blogs crazy because of a few posts by a few people. It drives me crazy that people just reject new ideas immediately and refuse to learn anything new. Because if people had hearts and took the time to learn about the struggle people of color had, they would admit there is a huge problem in the United States. Racism didn’t just melt away when President Obama was elected; people are more racist now than ever, and demanded his birth certificate for months and months. Do you remember that?

And we’re not post-feminist, either: women are still making less money for equal work, their reproductive rights were voted on 8 times this year, and that’s not to mention anything the media is throwing out at our young people. If you’re reading this, and disagree with what I am saying, ask yourself why you buy the clothes you buy, or if you wear cosmetics, why do you wear them? Because I choose clothes I am comfortable in, and if I wear cosmetics, it’s for me, for fun. Not because I think I’m horribly ugly without them. “Well no one thinks that.” There’s plenty of people I know that do, so. Riddle me that. Hating your appearance is not a natural occurrence found in nature.

It’s things like that I don’t think apply to “well that’s your opinion”. My opinion is in line with what is fact, and the fact is we are not post-racial, and we are not post-feminism either. Take a look at the world around you, beyond what affects you personally. Just look.

Perhaps we don’t like what we see: our hips, our loss of hair, our shoe size, our dimples, our knuckles too big, our eating habits, our disposition. We have disclosed these things in secret, likes and dislikes, behind doors with locks, our lonely rooms, our messy desks, our empty hearts, our sudden bursts of energy, our sudden bouts of depression. Don’t worry. Put away your mirrors and your beauty magazines and your books on tape. There is someone right here who knows you more than you do, who is making room on the couch, who is fixing a meal, who is putting on your favorite record, who is listening intently to what you have to say, who is standing there with you, face to face, hand to hand, eye to eye, mouth to mouth. There is no space left uncovered. This is where you belong.
